Thinking of cutting down your sleeping time to study more…

Timothy Here Again,

Welcome to the last Friday of the month as every minute, second and hour goes by, your ICAN Exam is getting closer. By now you might be thinking of cutting down your sleeping time to study more so that you can cover more aspects of the syllabus.

However, I would not totally agree with this and I will tell you why.

Staying awake longer, especially through the night, is likely to negatively affect your cognitive performance.

How do I know this?
From personal experience. I’ve stayed up for 20 hours at a time during exam weeks when I was writing my ICAN qualification exam, back then, so I know what you’re going through.
That practice made me feel miserable, It made me more anxious and exhausted. To make matters worse, it was difficult to remember all the details when I had the exam in front of me. — And that was really scary especially since I knew I had studied for weeks.

When I did the research on studying versus sleeping, I found out that sleep can help us learn, consolidate new memories, improve memory and recall, and give our brain time to get rid of unnecessary waste.
Conversely, chronic sleep deprivation can reduce our cognitive abilities, negatively impact our concentration, slow down the learning process, and can even temporarily reduce IQ (according to the book Sleep Thieves by Stanley Coren, Professor of Psychology at University of British Columbia).

So what is the solution?

It’s better if you focus on quality — not quantity — of your study time. I’ll give a few recommendations in our next post. Stay tuned.
