A Brief Interview with a 17years Experienced Examiner

Timothy Here,

“Thought without practice is empty; and action without thought is blind.” Kwame Nkrumah

Recently, in a seminar I attended at Airport Hotel, Ikeja, precisely on the launching of the new ICAN syllabus. I met a former examiner who helped me out with a very crucial disturbing question although he did not give me permission to disclose his name in this article. However, what prompted me to ask the him the questions was my inability to know reason why some student fail their exams after studying hard. It was a quite disturbing when a student called me to express her frustration after failing SFM.  As a result, I called some lecturers with 10years of experience that will educate me more why student fail their exams. They actually helped me out but I was not satisfied because they are not marking student’s paper. So they don’t know what the current trends are. Fortunately, on that blessed noon, I met an examiner who have been marking ICAN papers for the last 17years in the same airport hotel. Although, his seminar was completely different from mine.

We exchanged pleasantries on our family and business. So, I used the opportunity to ask him what was troubling me and he was glad to give a helping hand briefly. He mentioned reasons why some students are unsuccessful in the exam which have been discussed in most of our posts. However, I went ahead to ask him some specific questions regarding exam which have been clearly explained below.

Me: What is your general overview of students

Examiner: Student are people working hard in all sectors of life trying and working hard to become more successful in all their endeavours and add more value both locally and internationally

Me: from your 17 years experience of marking, do student really answer the questions satisfactorily?

Examiner: No, they do not have indepth study of the course. They only have a faint idea of the topics. Sometimes, it is as if they did not study at all. I am not saying that they did not study but I am just telling you what I perceive as an examiner.

Me: with the solution student provide to each questions, do they really understand the questions?

Examiner: In most cases they don’t understand the questions. That is, they don’t understand the examiner’s requirement. For instance, if a student is asked to “discuss”, what we expect student to have a basic knowledge of the subject matter, analysis and draw their own judgment.

Me: In computation, do student really know how to apply the formulas and tables.

Examiner: They really do their best. However, under some certain circumstance, student don’t really know how to apply the formulas based on the question that are scenario based and their analysis sometimes is not indepth or don’t give indepth analysis at all.

Me: Should the hand writing be clear

Examiner: Sure it should so that we will not be stressed when marking the exams and besides, it will also affect the allocated mark of the questions.

Me: Do student follow the instruction.

Examiner: Yes they do but not at all times.  Probably, due to exam pressure and time they actually forget the instructions.

Me: What is your advice?

Examiner: Student should practice questions and answers. This will help them understand the trend, style , depth of answering questions and answers. They should also carefully read and understand the questions asked by the examiner because some of them fail not only because they do not the answer but they ignore to follow the examiner’s instruction.

Please share this post because you might not know who will be helping.
